5 Simple Hangover Cures
These 5 simple hangover cures can help flush the toxins from your liver and help to relieve that hungover feeling.
But first……..(a little more science…)
A hangover is your liver in turmoil!
The majority of alcohol has to be metabolised by the liver so the hungover feeling is your liver struggling to flush all those toxins through your system. Despite the abuse it can suffer as part of a modern urban lifestyle, your liver is a very clever organ and can renew itself almost entirely in only six weeks. It can be reduced by up to ninety percent and still be able to regenerate itself. It filters more than a liter of blood every minute to remove bacteria and toxins from circulation.
When your liver is struggling to detox more toxins than usual, you’ll experience hangovers that range from dull headache to the shakes.
Try the following 5 simple hangover cures to recharge your liver and flush out those toxins. Continue reading
Essential Oils for a Happy, Balanced Thyroid
I have not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that you know someone with some kind of thyroid issue.
Whether under or over active, symptoms can be quite severe and make day to day life difficult to adjust to in the initial days and weeks. 3 close friends of mine likened their experience of it prior to diagnosis to absolute madness. While they each chose to follow conventional allopathic treatments, I, ever the optimistic aromatherapist, want to let you know that a combination of carefully selected essential oils can be extremely effective for helping to treat the physical symptoms of thyroid disorders.
If that were all I was about to share with you, I don’t think I would have become an aromatherapist in the first place! Their real USP (unique selling point) is their ability to create a positive state of mind and relieve stress. Yup, that’s just one reason to explore this sensory healing experience.
In this post I’ve selected 5 effective essential oils that can be used for treating an under-active thyroid to give you an idea of how they can help (FYI there are dozens more out of the 300-odd we use in aromatherapy).

A Simple Meditation Exercise by Jillian Lavender
A Stress Buster to Start the Day
If you’ve ever thought that you have to hike to a beautiful mountain top or go to a yoga retreat and sit in an uncomfortable lotus position in order to meditate, then think again!
While sitting in the lotus position is easy and comfortable for many, lying down or sitting in a chair is equally effective if you want to experience the benefits of meditation and don’t have the flexibility to contort yourself into a pretzel!
In fact, it’s an amazing way to start the day, so try this simple technique, which can be done anywhere: in bed in the morning, sitting on the train, at your desk at work or just before sleep at night.
It’s meditation “on-the-go” from the lovely Jillian Lavender, whom I had the chance to interview a couple of months ago.
Enjoy! xx
Body Feeling Technique
by Jillian Lavender, Director, London Meditation Centre
Stress and tension get locked into the body and this often makes us anxious and unable to sleep. A powerful way to release the stress is to do some Body Feeling Meditation.
Sit or lie down and close the eyes and take a moment to get comfortable.
- Somewhere in the body there will be a dominant sensation. It can be anything – a tightness in the chest; maybe pressure in the temples;
- Gently bring the attention to that sensation. There is no need to concentrate or focus – simply let the attention lightly rest there.
- After a moment, that sensation will start to dissolve and another sensation will become primary. Let the attention move to this new sensation in the body.
- Again after a few moments this will begin to dissipate and another part of the body will draw your attention. Continue in just the same way.
- After a few minutes, you’ll naturally find yourself thinking other thoughts easily – almost a sense of daydreaming. Open the eyes slowly.
This simple exercise allows the mind to settle down and stress and tension to be released from the body.
Immediately we feel lighter and calmer and ready to deal with the demands of life.

Essential Oils for the Treatment of Sinusitis
Essential oils, combined with some strategic changes to your diet, can make an extremely effective treatment for sinusitis. Sinusitis can be mild or extreme, acute (short term) or chronic (long term).
Essential oils from leaves, resins and woods are effective for respiratory tract infections because they can be drying and soothing as well as stimulating and active in fighting pulmonary bacteria.
They can be administered easily at home using inhalations, compresses, and diffusers, aiding overall well being and making your home smell fantastic.
But first, what are the symptoms and causes of sinusitis?
The art of sleep: tips to avoid insomnia
We need sleep, but sometimes we just can’t get enough or even any. We are stressed, or busy, or experiencing physical pain that prevents us from drifting away to nirvana. We need sleep, and, although scientists have not actually figured out why, there are some interesting theories which I’ve highlighted in Why do we sleep?
Thousands of people round the world struggle with sleep every single night, for a variety of reasons. My heart goes out to you.
If you haven’t tried the following, maybe these tips can help you to achieve what many of us take for granted: a restful and restorative night’s sleep.
Treating and Preventing Psoriasis
Those who suffer from psoriasis will know that it’s a stubborn and difficult problem to treat. Affecting the elbows, knees, lower back, ears and scalp, it’s a common inflammatory disease characterised by a dry, silvery, scaly appearance.
With regular use, essential oils can help with prevention and treatment. Not only can they effectively treat the symptoms by soothing and healing the skin, they can also help to *reduce stress*, which is often a precursor to an outbreak of the condition.
Cure a hangover with fennel and juniper
If you’re suffering from a hangover, help is at hand with a couple of well chosen essential oils combined with either a hot shower or a simple inhalation. Try inhaling or showering with essential oils of fennel and juniper to cure a hangover.
Essential oils of fennel and juniper make a great hangover cure
The sweet and earthy smell of Fennel packs a punch with it’s peppery, spicey undertones. It is an effective lymphatic decongestant and excellent at eliminating toxins from the body. It also gives you strength and stamina to face the day. An absolute essential for any hangover cure.
Juniper Juniperis communis is a fantastic all over body stimulant, that gets all process moving in the right direction! It is a superb detoxifier, helping to clear waste from the mind and body. Really great for that depressed morning after feeling as the fresh, warm and woody aroma uplifts the spirits and refreshes all parts that other hangover cures just cannot reach.
Aromatherapy is effective for menopausal symptoms
A confusing and emotional time characterised by a zillion unfamiliar symptoms can make your favourite loved one quite difficult to be around.
Whether it’s your mother, partner, sister or friend, you’ll want to be a strong support for them during a time of dramatic change – which they experience as PMT times 1,000 – called the menopause with symptoms actually starting about 10-15 years prior to what most people consider “true” menopause.
Essential Oils for an Under-Active Thyroid
Chances are you or someone you know suffers the inconvenience of an under active thyroid. A hugely important gland in our body, the thyroid affects every cell in the body excepting only a few (the adult brain, spleen, testes and uterus).
When we have thyroid problems, the symptoms can be acute and debilitating. Alternative remedies such as essential oils can be very effective thyroid treatments. Black pepper, grapefruit, coriander, thyme and geranium are all fantastic for the body and the mind.
Getting rid of a plantar wart with essential oils
Have you tried an over the counter salicylic acid treatment, cryotherapy (freezing) and other remedies like duct tape and still no luck? Getting rid of a plantar wart is not always easy and can take time. If all else has failed, you might like to consider an alternative.
It might be time to bring in the big guns: Lemon, Tea Tree and Thyme essential oils.
Essential Oils for Baby Rash
Any skin condition on your baby is a tough one. The mystery of the cause and the degree of discomfort it might be causing is unknown to you because baby can’t tell you how they feel. Essential oils of lavender and roman chamomile can be used on baby rash for babies over 6 months in a very low dilution to gently and effectively treat any irritation.
The first step is to go to your doctor for a proper diagnosis. Once you’ve done this you are in a better position to research both the causes and try alternatives to relieve the symptoms. Even if the doctor can’t figure out what it is, there are a number of proactive measures you can take to determine and remove the cause:
The inconvenience of an under-active thyroid
Chances are you or someone you know suffers the inconvenience of an under active thyroid. A hugely important gland in our body, the thyroid affects every cell in the body excepting only a few (the adult brain, spleen, testes and uterus). When it is over active or under active we can experience a plethora of symptoms that are both uncomfortable and downright inconvenient. This post sets out to give you the gist of what happens when you have an under – active thyroid and how the strategic use of Aromatherapy can help to alleviate some of the symptoms. Not only is Aromatherapy good for providing relief for the physical symptoms, it also excels at creating a more balanced terrain upon which healing can occur by creating a positive state of mind and relieving stress.
BACK TO THE BASICS – THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
The thyroid is part of a collection of glands that make up the endocrine system. This collection of glands secrete hormones, or chemical messengers, so to speak. These chemical messengers instruct or stimulate other glands or tissues in the body in a variety of ways. Carried by the blood stream, they maintain homeostasis (a stable, constant environment within our bodies) and help to regulate the essential processes of growth, reproduction, development and the control of the storage & utilisation of every cell in the body.
To take or not to take: antibiotics or essential oils?
Even though the attitude to antibiotics is regarded as “prescribe only when absolute necessary”, them seem to be prescribed too often and too recklessly, even in cases where they are of no use, as in viral illnesses. Surely this is madness. All too commonplace, unfortunately, and not often challenged.
Depression and the path to sunshine
Last November, Purple Ronnie creator and the creative force behind Edward Monkton wrote a brilliant and honest account of his experience of depression, published in TimesOnline.
You land on the Moon and bounce from step to 12ft step in your giant gravity boots. What a sensation of freedom and excitement! But then, too late, you notice that you forgot to lace the boots up. They slip off your feet and you spiral upwards and outwards, away from the Moon. With a sudden surge of hyper-vertigo, you realise that the rest of your life will be spent spinning alone, weightless, through the dark emptiness of space.
From memory this is the first candid piece that comes so close to explaining what, for many, is indescribable. Despite it’s prolific nature it is not openly talked about or even accepted as a tangible illness that requires a tangible solution. Caused by stress triggered by all sorts of experiences from loss and illness to abuse and addiction, (and often just life itself), the fact that many don’t understand how they feel or why they feel this way makes it all the harder to heal from. We love Elizabeth Gilberts account in Eat, Pray , Love:
Depression and loneliness track me down after about ten days in Italy…..They they frisk me. They empty my pockets of joy I had been carrying there. Depression even confiscates my identity; but he always does that…..”It’s not fair for you to come here,” I tell depression. “I paid you off already. I served my time in New York.” But he just gives me that dark smile, settles into my favourite chair, puts his feet up on my table and lights a cigar, filling the place with his awful smoke.”
Many people say they would avoid medication, but often this can be the only hand that reaches down to you when you’re in the abyss. Despite a myriad of side effects, antidepressants are prescribed at alarming rates. As reported by Scientific American, a controversial article just published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that
antidepressants are no more effective than placebos for most depressed patients. Jay Fournier and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania aggregated individual patient data from six high-quality clinical trials and found that the superiority of antidepressants over placebo is clinically significant only for patients who are very severely depressed. For patients with mild, moderate, and even severe depression, placebos work nearly as well as antidepressants.
Is there another way? Alongside a number of what are considered “alternative” or “holistic” therapies, Aromatherapy has proved to be a relief and a tonic for many people suffering from depression, either as a complement to other treatments (both medical, emotional, alternative and psychotherapies) as well as full-blown alternatives.
