If you’re already using essential oils here and there without extensive knowledge or know-how, then this post will give you the heads up on how to benefit from Aromatherapy without putting yourself in short or long-term harms way. Essential oil safety 101.
There are some basic rules to follow:
- Never use essential oils neat – not even Tea Tree or Lavender
- Always dilute them before application or use on the skin
- Less is always more
- If in doubt, don’t
- Consider your current or past medical/ health status before selecting oils e.g. pregnancy, epilepsy, HIV, eczema etc etc
You may already have had the itchy/ burning experience of a “Lemon” essential oil bath, or headaches caused by patchouli & geranium. Geranium can be great for headaches, but not if you suffer from migraine. Likewise Juniper is a tonic for the kidneys, but should be avoided if you have kidney disease or sever kidney problems. Lavender can be sedative or relaxing depending on the quantity used (don’t use 6 drops on the pillow before bed or you will be wired!). This is just the tip of the iceberg. Some oils create a toxic build up if used long term.
